Job Title:        Golf Course Superintendent

FLSA:             Exempt

Pay Grade:     G5

Reports To:     General Manager

Supervised Positions:  Assistant Superintendent, Greens Technician(s), and Equipment Technician(s)

 

Job Purpose: This position performs difficult technical work supervising the maintenance and development of the municipal golf course.  The position shall provide players with a course and practice areas which provide excellent playing conditions and exceptional turf management.   This position reports to the General Manager.

 

Essential Duties:

  1. Provide a positive experience for golf course patrons.
  2. Plan, assign, schedule and manage the municipal golf course maintenance and vehicle maintenance operations.
  3. Train maintenance employees in the technical aspect of course maintenance.
  4. Ensure safe work habits and a safe working environment for all employees and volunteers of the maintenance operations of the course. Maintain a safe environment for players.
  5. Manage the application of pesticides and fertilizers as well as keep inventory of all products.
  6. Inspect the course daily and schedule the maintenance work needed.
  7. Manage and maintain irrigation, drainage, watering and pond maintenance, wells, pumps and automatic controls.
  8. Ensure the proper completion of all course development, remodeling, layout changes and special projects.
  9. Ensure all types of turf grass are properly planted, fertilized and maintained.
  10. Supervision of staff who plant, cultivate, prune and care for a variety of plants, shrubs and trees.
  11. Ensure the course is clean, aesthetically attractive and presentable at all times.
  12. Manage equipment, materials, and resources effectively.
  13. Writes specifications for items/equipment to be purchased and/or repaired.
  14. Keeps records of items purchased, materials used, and man hours of maintenance work for the course.
  15. Assist with annual budgeting and formulate Capital Improvement Plans and estimates.
  16. Manage purchase requisitions for materials and arrange for the repair of broken equipment.
  17. Maintain effective relations with patrons, employees, City staff, and the public.
  18. Work effectively with pro-shop staff to coordinate tournaments, outings, and other daily golf play.
  19. Regularly operates City vehicles or equipment and is considered safety sensitive.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills Required:

  1. Thorough knowledge of golf course turfgrass development, care, and maintenance.
  2. Thorough knowledge of tools and equipment used in the operation of a golf course.
  3. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of golf course maintenance.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
  5. Excellent customer service skills.
  6. Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures.
  7. Proficient with computer programs.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

            Assistant Superintendent, Greens Technician(s), and Equipment Technician(s)

 

Education and/or Experience:

         Required: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree with at least two (2) years supervisory experience in Agronomy, Turf Management, Plant Sciences or related field.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out multi-step instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems by choosing from several known choices with frequent reliance on how problems were dealt with before.
